Is Jesus God? And to be a Christian, do you have to believe that he is?

You have to believe that Jesus is the Son of God in order to be a Christian. Now, there are different theories about the trinity. Some believe that Jesus, God, and the Holy Spirit are literally one. I think that Jesus and God are separate but are connected by the holy spirit.
