What is that ladder that Jacob saw in his dream?

Jacob as he was running away from Esau saw a dream "And he dreamed and behold a ladder set up on the earth and the top of it reached to heaven and the angels of God ascending and descending on it" Genesis 28:12 Does this ladder represents the Lord Jesus, the only mediator between us on earth and heaven. Does this link with the words of our Lord Jesus Christ saying "Verily, verily I say unto you hereafter ye shall see heaven open and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man" John 1:51
